Doing it…the natural way.

Have you ever felt like your body is some mystery that only your doctor can understand?  Do you feel like getting older is just another way of saying “falling apart”?
Your body is your greatest asset and the health of your body is greatly influenced by every decision you make regarding your lifestyle and eating habits, therefore only you possess full control over your health.

As a naturopathic doctor I’ve spent many years studying the inner workings of the human body, as well as the processes of degeneration and disease.   Alongside that, I’ve been taught a multitude of ways to keep the body healthy and in balance using natural therapies.  With all that said, themost important thing that I’ve learned is that we all possess the ability to be our healthiest and that nature has generously provided us with all the tools we need to live well.  We just need to learn how to use them!

Vis medicatrix naturae translates to “the healing power of nature”.  This is one of the naturopathic principles and a powerful statement in itself.  It not only refers to the body’s incredible ability to heal itself, but this phrase also reminds me of the healing power of all that is natural, such as foods, herbs, flowers, trees, water and so much more.  Each one of us has this inherent healing ability, which is wonderfully organized, orderly and intelligent.  Isn’t it amazing that our body automatically knows what to do to stimulate the healing process?  Let’s look at some examples:  when we cut our finger the wound automatically starts to close; a fever is a common and highly advantageous reaction to the flu; vomiting and diarrhea are the body’s way of responding to the ingestion of rotten foods.

For most of us life is one busy ride, during which we find ourselves continually running from one thing to the next as we attempt to fit as much into our day as possible in order to make ends meet or to just feel like we’ve had a productive day.  We’ve been so consumed by this fast passed life that all too often we neglect our own health in the process.  It’s time to take control and allow ourselves the necessary time to properly care for our bodies, which are such amazing gifts, that we’ve all been given to enjoy.  By focusing on caring for your body you will begin to know it better and will find that it’s not as mysterious as you may have once thought.   You’re never too old to begin experiencing the health improvements that result from treating your body with the loving care and respect that it deserves.

It is this which I’d like to explore with you in a more detailed manner.  Through this blog I wish to take you on a journey down a path of empowerment by sharing with you ways in which to tap into this “healing power of nature”.  By learning about how our bodies work as well as, how to use the tools that Mother Nature has provided for us, I hope you will come to the conclusion that your health truly is in your hands.

“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.”   ~Thomas Edison

  • Great post and best of luck with the blog!

I agree that people are often quick to turn to the doctor or the pills without considering the alternative that they already have an innate healing ability.

I wrote an article a few weeks ago about the role Functional Medicine could play in treating and preventing chronic disease, versus the traditional western approach which often involves just treating the symptoms.
